Were you born in the summer? Love the beach? A Luau theme birthday party can bring the sunshine inside for a fun theme everyone will enjoy!

As guests arrive, have them pose for photos in a Hula photo stand! Then, give the guys straw hats to wear and give the girls hula skirts  to dance the night away! You can’t have a luau without leis either! Having these party items for your guests right at the entrance to the party will ensure that your guests are in the mood for your luau party right from the start.

Luau Party Themed Decorations Ideas

When your guests arrive to the party you want to make sure your guests know they’re in the right place. Having a luau themed party sign and a grass doorway can be a great way for guests to know they are in the right place. Transform your party room or backyard into a Tiki Island by using themed decorations that come in kits that make it easy to transform the entire space quickly and cost effectively.

  • Cover your walls in bamboo and create a “waterfall” in one corner using dark blue gossamer fabric. Having a fan aimed up at the fabric can create a moving water type of effect.
  • Add a grass skirt to all your tables, or transform them into Tiki huts. String tropical lights all throughout your party space, or make your room look like you’re partying on a boat
  • Use an inflatable palm tree cooler, so even your drinks match the theme!
  • Create a palm tree balloon arch over your cake or gift table so it becomes a focal point.
  • Use coconut votive holders or tiki torches on your tables, and make sure you have Sweet 16 napkins to match!
  • Rent colored lighting to quickly decorate, add color, and illuminate your space creating a luau theme feel.

Luau Party Activities and Games

The activities that can be done at a Luau make it the perfect option for a large party! You can accomodate a large number of guests or scale them down for a smaller more intimate party. Some of the best luau activities and games are:

  • The limbo
  • Take a whack at a piñata
  • Play the ukulele
  • Bowling with pineapples

Luau Theme Party Food

Food at a luau traditionally is based on food that can be found on islands. You want to make sure that you have food for all of your guests so that everyone has something that they would like to eat. Some great food that you could have at your party might be:

  • Pig roast
  • Fried shrimp
  • Sushi
  • Chicken fingers
  • Chicken skewers
  • Fish tacos
  • Teriyaki chicken
  • Rice bowls
  • Plantain chips

After the Party

If you have a photographer or take photos at the party send photos of you with the person you are sending thank you notes for an even more personalized thank you. If you take a large group photo of everyone at the party it can be a great way to send that photo out with your thank you so that everyone can have a memento to remember the party by.
